Access to Work (AtW) is a discretionary grant scheme that provides support to people in employment that have a disability or a physical or mental health condition. The grant can be used by people who are deaf or hard of hearing to overcome work related barriers. Our remote captioning service, Ai-Live, is a registered AtW service that provides access to spoken dialogue displayed on a screen and delivered in real-time. The UK Government recently announced changes to AtW funding due to take place in April 2018, and we've listed the three most important things to know: 

1: Funding cap increase

People who are deaf or hard of hearing will be able to access funding of up to £57,200 per annum for support in the workplace. Further to this, it has been announced that existing AtW-funded employees will be able to have their needs considered against this new limit when their funding is due for annual review.

2: Get your access confirmed earlier

Currently, you can only apply for AtW funding six weeks before starting a new job. However, you will now be able to submit applications up to 12 weeks before the start date. This will ensure that there's more time to arrange the support you need from the day you have a job lined up.

3: Higher approval rate

Last year, AtW approved funding for 8% more people than in 2015/16. This increase included 13% more people who are deaf or have hearing loss, and it's expected to continue to rise this year.
